Have you ever watched Taiwanese opera? The documentary “The Immortal’s Play” tells an emotional story of a star of the Vietnamese National Circus become a star in traditional Taiwanese opera. Since childhood, Annie Nguyen dreamed of being a Vietnamese drama star, so what led her to an old Taiwanese theatre company? How did she go from not knowing a word of Mandarin or Taiwanese, to making her debut as the lead role on a grand stage? Even while caring for her daughter with a long-term illness, Annie had to follow the theatre company wherever they went, in a hectic drama of life. Even when there was no audience, even when there was no applause, Annie still performed for an invisible “God” within her own mind. Within the chaos of her own life, was the dream-life drama she had to perform.
你/妳有看過台灣歌仔戲嗎？《神戲》不只是談已經凋零的野台歌仔戲，更是性別與國族交織下新住民女性的動人心事。來自越南的阮安妮，自小夢想成為越南傳統戲劇明星，卻陰差陽錯成為國家馬戲團台柱。偶然來台表演，邂逅嘉義老戲班團長芳遠，也意外接續兒時的夢想。她花了兩年歲月學習深奧的歌仔戲，從一句國台語都不會，到挑起大梁成為戲班的當家花旦，就如安妮自己所說，她是註定要來唱歌仔戲的。然而，安妮的戲夢人生，附帶的是跌宕的命運。帶著長期洗腎的小女兒阿噹，隨戲班逐廟口而居的漂泊生活，一切辛酸衰憊只埋藏在艷麗舞台後的休息棚裡，安妮彰顯了放諸四海的母親力量。野台戲隨著時代變遷凋敝，即使沒人看，沒有掌聲，安妮和戲班人仍為看不見的「神」賣力演出，在那樣的角落，也是安妮在演給自己看的一段人生戲碼。
